Now that the school year has come to a close, there is a bit of business to tidy up. The South Hagerstown High School Alumni Association has named the recipients of its scholarships. Congratulations and best wishes in their future endeavors as they continue their education at the next level. Already committed to Towson to study nursing is Kaitlyn Nicole Spangler. Joining Kaitlyn at Towson is Stephanie Swope. Sarah Bjerga and Lauren Fahrney plan to attend Hagerstown Community College and then transfer to four-year schools.

"We're going to have an amphitheater this year," said Lisa Stewart, coordinator of HJC's alumni office. The idea for an amphitheater cropped up in 1991 when a group of alumni association members started planning for the college's 50th anniversary in 1996, Stewart said.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Rob Baughman, president and general manager of Interstate Truck Equipment Inc. of Hagerstown, was elected president of the newly formed alumni association of the Franklin County Career and Technology Center. Baughman is a 1973 graduate of the school where he was a machining student. Interstate Truck Equipment employs eight graduates of the school, all of whom have become members of the alumni association. Other officers of the association include Kristi Tanner, a Franklin County domestic relations officer, vice president; Amy Tanner, a substitute classroom teacher, secretary; Bobbi Jo Ruby-Johnson, a receptionist at the Center for Dermatology and Maxillary Surgery in Chambersburg, Pa., assistant secretary; and Rodney B. Smith, president and owner of Rodney B. Smith Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Inc. of Chambersburg, treasurer.

Salem Avenue Elementary School recently recognized 32 students who earned perfect attendance for the entire 2011/2012 school year. Hagerstown mayoral debate Thursday The Citizens for Protection of Washington County will sponsor a mayoral debate between incumbent Robert E. Bruchey and challenger David S. Gysberts at the Western Enterprise Fire Co. meeting and bingo hall at 526 Washington Square, Hagerstown on Thursday, beginning at 7 p.m. The forum is open to the public, and questions will be taken from the audience.

marlob@herald-mail.com HAGERSTOWN - Ned Martin had a cane when he arrived at the Valentine Dance at Hagerstown Community College Friday night, but once the music started, he was on the dance floor and "In The Mood" - the cane stayed at his chair. "My wife, Waunita, and I were at this dance last year and we had a great time," said the 93-year-old resident of Ravenwood Lutheran Village. The dinner/dance was the second annual holiday event, co-sponsored by the HCC Alumni and Student Government associations.

St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown will hold a slippery potpie dinner, silent auction and show by the gospel trio Journey of Grace. Doors open at 5 p.m. Saturday and dinner will be served at 5:30. The show will begin at 7 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the six youths who will attend the ECLA, or Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, youth ministries conference in New Orleans.     Tickets cost $7 and can be obtained by calling 301-733-2678. The Hagerstown YMCA Achievers will host its annual program kickoff/open house Sunday, Sept. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the YMCA's multipurpose room. The program's goal is to encourage educational and career goals for students in grades six to 12. Registration is available at the YMCA front desk, or students can register at the event.  The program costs $50 for YMCA members and $75 for nonmembers. Financial scholarships are available for those who qualify. The event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

Parents, be on the lookout for fundraiser forms and important papers that need to be signed. Bring on the Friday night lights. High school football opens Friday evening in Washington County as South Hagerstown High School will hold its home opener against Century High School.  Boonsboro High also will be playing at home Friday.   Legion scholarships Dixon-Troxell American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown awarded two scholarships of $1,000 each to two area students.

South Hagerstown High's Alumni Association will hold a yard sale Saturday, Sept. 21, on the school grounds from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Setup begins at 7 a.m. The event will take place rain or shine. The Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association will host its annual Alumni and Friends Cruise in January 2014. The 11-day, 10-night cruise will be held from Jan. 11 to 21, 2014, aboard Royal Caribbean's Grandeur of the Seas cruise ship. Port stops include Cozumel, Mexico; Grand Cayman Islands; Jamaica; and Labadee, Haiti. The cruise is open to the public. Rates start at $1,123.50 per person/double occupancy. The cruise fee includes accommodations for 10 nights on the ship, all government taxes and fees, all meals and entertainment, and round-trip transportation from HCC to the departure port.

The event included the presentation of awards, Phi Theta Kappa membership, graduation honors, Future Educators Honor Association membership and dean's list honors. The Frostburg State University Alumni Association has honored Mel Malchenson of Hagerstown with the Service to Alma Mater award for her consistent dedication to the advancement of FSU. The award was presented at FSU's annual Sloop Institute for Excellence in Leadership on March 8. “Mel's love for Frostburg State University is seemingly unparalleled,” said FSU President Jonathan Gibralter. “While she credits us for giving so much to her, it is her selfless dedication that has been and continues to be a gift to us.” Malchenson earned two master's degrees from Frostburg in 1981 and 1993.

A Pennsylvania business selling appliances and artwork m ade out of leaves is one of the vendors participating in this weekend's 19th annual Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association Flower & Garden Show. The event started Saturday and continues today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at HCC's Athletic, Recreation and Community Center. Gay Iapalucci, owner of Leaf Me Alone of Bedford, Pa., takes real leaves, turns them over and blends concrete mixtures with them. After that, they are painted and can be sold as various products, including a bird bath, a Lazy Susan or even a patio table.
