HAGERSTOWN -- Allegiant Air, which since November has operated twice-weekly flights between Hagerstown and Orlando, Fla., will suspend that service from Aug. 17 to Oct. 29, an airline spokeswoman said Wednesday. The suspension was a business decision made by the airline based on the normal dip in vacation travel that corresponds with the beginning of the school year, Allegiant Air spokeswoman Tyri Squyres said. "It's a way to ensure that we keep our flights full and therefore our fares really low," Squyres said.

There was some good news mixed with some uncertainties when Hagerstown Regional Airport Director Phil Ridenour briefed the Washington County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday. On the good side, Allegiant Air, which operates twice weekly flights to Orlando from the airport, had nearly 4,800 passengers between Jan. 4 and Feb. 25, Ridenour said. Its planes were at 93 percent of capacity on departures, or 154 passengers per flight, he said. Departures averaged about 88 percent of capacity last year, he said.

Allegiant Air will resume its service between Hagerstown Regional Airport and the Orlando, Fla., area on Friday, according to a company spokeswoman. The airline suspended its service out of Hagerstown Regional Airport from Aug. 17 until Thursday as a business decision. "We seasonally pull down service throughout our system to Florida," Allegiant Air spokeswoman Tyri Squyres wrote in an e-mail. "There is very little demand from customers for flights to Florida in the early fall.

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Hagerstown Regional Airport officials are expected to announce Wednesday that Allegiant Air, a Las Vegas-based airline that flies to U.S. vacation destinations, has agreed to provide commercial air service to Hagerstown. Allegiant Air will fly between Hagerstown and Orlando, according to a government official with knowledge of the agreement. Tyri Squyres, spokeswoman for Allegiant Air, said she would neither confirm nor deny the agreement but said Allegiant Air "would be very interested" in flying to Hagerstown.

WASHINGTON COUNTY - Carolyn S. Motz was smiling but silent as she walked to the podium, a gold Mickey Mouse pin on her jacket the only clue to what she was about to say. A few minutes later, she invited Allegiant Air's sales director to the podium, and the pair donned Mickey Mouse ears as they confirmed what many people already had heard: Hagerstown Regional Airport's long year without commercial service was over. "Today is a big day," said Motz, the airport's director, as she announced that Allegiant Air will begin twice-weekly, nonstop flights between Hagerstown and Orlando in November.

Allegiant Air honors Hagerstown Regional Airport Hagerstown Regional Airport was honored last week at Allegiant Air's annual conference in Las Vegas, Nev. Washington County Commissioner John F. Barr, who was at the conference, said the award was a surprise because Allegiant currently doesn't fly out of Hagerstown. Greg Larsen, the airport's business development manager, who also went to the conference, agreed. “It surprised the heck out of both of us, I think,” Larsen said.
