Allegiant Air on Friday began a new chapter of commercial service between Hagerstown Regional Airport and Orlando, Fla. Opening-day participation was strong, with the first flight from Orlando to Hagerstown about 85 percent full, which airport Director Phil Ridenour called unusually good. Then, the first flight leaving Hagerstown was even more crowded. Shortly before it left, Ridenour said 145 of the 150 seats had been sold. Allegiant flew from Hagerstown to Orlando-Sanford International Airport from November 2008 through July 2010, ending service because of a “lack of market demand,” The Herald-Mail reported at the time.

HAGERSTOWN -- Allegiant Air's final flight from Hagerstown Regional Airport took off Friday morning, and already airport officials are working to replace it with a similar service, airport business development manager Greg Larsen said. "As sad as it was today to see that airplane leaving, Allegiant has given us some very strong tools to attract a follow-on carrier, and I think that will happen," Larsen said. Airport officials "had at least one conversation" with another airline interested in offering service to Orlando, possibly starting early next year or sooner, he said.

HAGERSTOWN -- Less than three months into Allegiant Air's twice-weekly service to Orlando, Fla., Hagerstown Regional Airport officials say ticket sales are exceeding expectations and chances look good for landing service to another popular destination this year. The success of Allegiant's less-than-daily, leisure-destination model is helping talks with two other operators that are interested in providing a similar service to another southern Atlantic Coast destination, said Greg Larsen, the airport's business development manager.

Allegiant Air will be halting its service from Hagerstown to Orlando, Fla., in August. Does that signify the airline might be leaving Hagerstown Regional Airport? The question comes from Howie Lore of Winchester, Va., who recently sent an email to The Herald-Mail saying the airline was only booking flights on its website through Aug. 13. “... Is this a sign once again of departing Hagerstown?” Lore asked. He said in a follow-up email that he and others enjoy being able to fly out of Hagerstown rather than traveling to Baltimore or Washington, D.C. According to Allegiant spokeswoman Jessica Wheeler, the airline has no intentions of leaving Hagerstown and the absence of available flights after Aug. 13 is only part of its “seasonal suspension” of service.

Expanding existing commercial air service and targeting new leisure destinations are two recommendations for future growth at the Hagerstown Regional Airport, according to a third-party consultant study. Virginia-based AvPorts, a firm with decades of experience in airport management, development and marketing, presented an overview of its study to Washington County officials on Aug. 20. The comprehensive 192-page marketing plan also suggests that airport officials look into establishing air cargo service for businesses, and increasing promotional efforts for existing businesses at the airport and to attract new ones.

“In reference to the recycling proposal in Washington County, it is ludicrous. To begin with, the provider of the recycling bins profits, from both the county and the materials they sell. B: There will be a lot of noncompliance.” - Hagerstown “Why does the county pay a refuse company a huge amount of money to collect recyclables, and then allows that company to sell those recyclables, obviously at a profit? Then why wouldn't the county do that themselves? Is this just too simple?
