Washington County Commissioner John F. Barr and Hagerstown Regional Airport officials were in Arizona this week to talk to Allegiant Air officials about additional flights in and out of Hagerstown, including Myrtle Beach, S.C., and more Florida destinations, Barr said Thursday. Airport Director Phil Ridenour told the commissioners Tuesday he would meet with Allegiant representatives Friday to discuss the possibility of opening a route from Hagerstown to Myrtle Beach. Direct Air had scheduled flights to Myrtle Beach that ended in 2011.

Allegiant Air on Friday began a new chapter of commercial service between Hagerstown Regional Airport and Orlando, Fla. Opening-day participation was strong, with the first flight from Orlando to Hagerstown about 85 percent full, which airport Director Phil Ridenour called unusually good. Then, the first flight leaving Hagerstown was even more crowded. Shortly before it left, Ridenour said 145 of the 150 seats had been sold. Allegiant flew from Hagerstown to Orlando-Sanford International Airport from November 2008 through July 2010, ending service because of a “lack of market demand,” The Herald-Mail reported at the time.

HAGERSTOWN -- Allegiant Air's final flight from Hagerstown Regional Airport took off Friday morning, and already airport officials are working to replace it with a similar service, airport business development manager Greg Larsen said. "As sad as it was today to see that airplane leaving, Allegiant has given us some very strong tools to attract a follow-on carrier, and I think that will happen," Larsen said. Airport officials "had at least one conversation" with another airline interested in offering service to Orlando, possibly starting early next year or sooner, he said.

HAGERSTOWN -- Less than three months into Allegiant Air's twice-weekly service to Orlando, Fla., Hagerstown Regional Airport officials say ticket sales are exceeding expectations and chances look good for landing service to another popular destination this year. The success of Allegiant's less-than-daily, leisure-destination model is helping talks with two other operators that are interested in providing a similar service to another southern Atlantic Coast destination, said Greg Larsen, the airport's business development manager.

Lured by incentives from Washington County, Allegiant Air is taking another go at providing air service from Hagerstown to Orlando, starting May 25, county and airline officials announced Thursday. The company, which flew the same route in 2008 through 2010, will again offer twice-weekly flights, generally on Mondays and Fridays, from Hagerstown Regional Airport toOrlando-Sanford International Airport, Allegiant Manager of Airports Eric Fletcher said. Tickets are already on sale, with an introductory rate of $59.99 each way for tickets purchased by April 12. The service will fill the gap left last August when Direct Air ended its service from the county-owned airport to Myrtle Beach and Lakeland, Fla. Currently, the airport's only commercial service is its commuter flights to Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Hagerstown Regional Airport's new commercial carrier has a history of canceling flights that are not profitable, and once canceled a route before service got off the ground. But airport officials said they are confident Allegiant will have the ridership it needs to keep it flying out of Hagerstown Regional Airport. Allegiant Air on Sept. 17 announced plans to start twice-weekly nonstop flights between Hagerstown and Orlando Sanford International Airport in November.
