As Friday's Maryland Class 1A West baseball final wore on, it became obvious the beef for Allegany and Clear Spring wasn't about to win the game. So it was time to turn to chicken. As in, a game of chicken. “The way things were going, it was going to come down to the first mistake,” said Clear Spring coach Mark Shives. The Blazers blinked first. It came in the form of an errant throw on a bang-bang play in the bottom of the seventh, allowing Trenton Eirich to score from second to give the Campers a 2-1 victory at Frederick's McCurdy Field.

BOONSBORO -- Allegany got just enough out of its offense early and Boonsboro couldn't quite get what it needed later in Friday's Maryland Class 1A West first-round baseball game. The Campers ended Boonsboro's season with a 6-4 decision to move into a quarterfinal matchup Monday at Clear Spring. Boonsboro batters had little discipline at the plate through the first four innings as Allegany lefty Cody Ellsworth fanned 10 and worked to a 6-0 lead. That lead was assembled against Dryan Cole, whom head coach Ben Leonard elected to start instead of ace lefty Seth Poffenberger, hoping to get past the Campers (9-7)

Del. George Edwards, R-Garrett/Allegany, appeared to be coasting to the Republican nomination for the District 1 Senate seat being vacated by John J. Hafer. At presstime, Edwards was leading his opponent, John "Ross" Sines, by a margin of 7,367 to 1,848. The district includes all of Garrett and Allegany counties and the westernmost portion of Washington County. These numbers reflect all of Garrett County's precincts, 78 percent of Allegany's and 43 percent of the Washington County precincts in that district.

By BOB PARASILITI Staff Writer Hagerstown Junior College coach Jim Brown made the right call. But the only thing he got for being right was the consolation prize in the Region XX basketball tournament. "The key to this game will be to be in position, especially when rebounding," Brown said four days before Sunday's championship game with Allegany. "We need to play well, but we need parity on the boards. We can't let them outrebound us 3 or 4 to 1. " Right key, wrong ratio, Jim. Allegany overpowered HJC by 30 rebounds - 61-31, including a 35-16 differential in the second half - to muscle to a 82-66 victory over the Hawks for its second straight region title before a full house at HJC's athletic complex.
