Fernando Abad entered a tight game and in a short span of three batters everything went downhill for the Washington Nationals. Jeff Bianchi lofted a single off Abad that dropped just behind Washington's drawn-in infield, breaking a tie and capping a five-run sixth inning in the Milwaukee Brewers' 8-5 win over the Nationals on Sunday. “They just nicked him to death,” Washington manager Davey Johnson said of Abad's day. The left-hander was called upon to hold a 4-2 lead with runners on first and third and one out in the sixth, but gave up a pair of improbable hits and a questionable double.

Edwin Jackson pitched seven effective innings, Adam LaRoche hit a three-run homer and the Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 5-3 on Wednesday night. Jackson (2-3) allowed three runs, two earned, and three hits to earn his first win since April 14 against Cincinnati. The right-hander was 0-3 with a 3.33 ERA in his previous eight starts. Sean Burnett pitched a perfect eighth and Tyler Clippard worked the ninth for his fifth save in six chances, completing a three-hitter.

It took a rare team meeting for the Washington Nationals to get what lately has been a rare victory when Stephen Strasburg starts. Strasburg struck out eight in seven innings and the Nationals won one of his outings for the first time since opening day by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 Saturday. “I was absolutely happy about getting through the seventh inning,” Strasburg said. “The biggest thing is to give your team a chance to win the ballgame. Not every game are you going to be lights out and hitting every spot.” Strasburg remained winless since his first start, though.

Andrelton Simmons hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, then made an eye-popping play to start the ninth as the Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Monday night and ended their four-game losing streak. Atlanta beat the Nationals for the eighth straight time dating to last season. The Braves swept three games at Washington earlier this month. Washington's Stephen Strasburg ended his career-worst streak of losses in four straight starts. He allowed two runs in six innings.

Jordan Zimmermann pitched six shutout innings, Adam LaRoche hit a two-run homer and the Washington Nationals hung on to beat the New York Mets 4-3 on Wednesday night. Steve Lombardozzi added a two-run double as Washington handed a sixth straight loss to the Mets, who held a team meeting before the game. Zimmermann (7-6) won his fourth straight, allowing just four hits in six innings, striking out four and walking none. In the seventh, Tom Gorzelanny allowed a one-out double to Lucas Duda, who scored on Andres Torres' single.

Despite losing three games to the New York Yankees in his team's highest-profile test this season, Davey Johnson felt good about the Washington Nationals' performance. One thing, however, was nagging him after the Yankees completed their sweep with a 4-1 win Sunday - the offensive struggles of third baseman Ryan Zimmerman. “What really concerns me is we've got to get Zim going,” Johnson said. “We've got to get Zim to a happy place.” Zimmerman went 0 for 4 in the game and 1 for 13 in the series to drop his average to .229.

Nearly three months ago, Jayson Werth broke his left wrist trying to make a catch in a game the Washington Nationals lost. It was a memorable game. Cole Hamels hit rookie Bryce Harper with a pitch and Harper stole home. At the time, the Nationals were 18-10 and led the NL East by a half-game. Without Werth, Washington went 43-32 and increased its lead by two games. Werth returned to the lineup Thursday night and joined in the fun. He had a single and an RBI groundout in the Nationals' 3-0 win over Hamels and the Phillies.

Adam LaRoche and the Washington Nationals handed R.A. Dickey his first loss in three months, beating the sinking New York Mets 5-2 Tuesday night behind Gio Gonzalez's seven crisp innings. LaRoche hit a tiebreaking homer and Gonzalez (13-5) gave up only two singles in a rematch of All-Star pitchers, five days after New York hit him hard to back Dickey during his 13th win. This time, it went the other way. Dickey (13-2) allowed five consecutive hits in the sixth, ending his 11-game winning streak, as the Mets lost their fifth straight and 11th in 12 games.

Ian Desmond was one close call away from his fourth strikeout of the night before he got another chance. He didn't miss it. Desmond hit a grand slam in the 11th inning and the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 Wednesday night, avoiding a three-game sweep. Jayson Werth's RBI single with two outs in the ninth tied it off Jonathan Papelbon, who blew a save for the second time in three nights after starting the season 13 for 13. Starters Kyle Kendrick and Gio Gonzalez both were outstanding, but wound up with no-decisions.

Dillon Gee seems to have the right change-of-speed repertoire to defeat the Washington Nationals. A couple lucky hops always help, too. Gee beat Washington for the third time this season and the New York Mets scored the go-ahead run when third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and shortstop Ian Desmond made errors on the same strange play for a 5-1 win Saturday. “Things kind of bounced my way,” Gee said. Daniel Murphy delivered three hits and first baseman Josh Satin started a pair of nifty double plays as the Mets won for the ninth time in 14 games.

Gio Gonzalez was inches from a no-hitter and the Washington Nationals hit five home runs Monday night, including long balls by their first two batters, in a 9-0 rout of the New York Mets. Gonzalez held the overmatched Mets hitless into the seventh before pinch-hitter Zach Lutz broke up the bid with a soft single for New York's only hit. Lutz swung at the first pitch of the inning and hit a looper that landed on the first base line, taking out a chunk of chalk well behind the bag. First baseman Adam LaRoche made a diving attempt as the ball hit the dirt, but it squirted by and into foul territory along the right field line.

Justin Upton led off the eighth inning with a tiebreaking homer, and the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves extended their winning streak to a season-high 11 games by beating the fading Washington Nationals 3-2 Monday night. Freddie Freeman drove in Atlanta's first two runs with a pair of singles in the third and fifth. Reliever David Carpenter (3-0) earned the win by retiring all five batters he faced. Upton's 20th homer came on a 3-2 pitch from Tyler Clippard (6-2), who replaced Stephen Strasburg to begin the eighth.

Adam LaRoche was struggling so much at the plate, he decided to try something different. So he grabbed teammate Jayson Werth's bat. The move paid off as LaRoche hit his 15th home run of the season in the sixth inning to help lead the Nationals to a 3-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Prior to the home run, Washington's first baseman had just one hit in his previous 28 at bats. LaRoche said Ian Desmond suggested he try Werth's bat as Werth was hitting .337 in his last 51 games. "My bat has not been feeling very good lately so why not give someone else's a try," LaRoche said.

Cole Hamels wasn't about to give the ball to Charlie Manuel with the game on the line. He didn't have to. Hamels threw eight sharp innings, Michael Young hit a two-run double and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 Tuesday night for their third straight win. Hamels (4-11) allowed one run and six hits to win his second consecutive start for the first time this season. The three-time All-Star lefty has struggled in his first full year after signing a $144 million contract extension last July.

If Dan Haren could erase the first inning, he would've stopped his losing skid. John Lannan tossed four-hit ball over eight innings against his former team, Ben Revere had three hits and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 3-2 Monday night. Haren (4-10) came off the disabled list and took the loss after missing two weeks because of right shoulder inflammation. The righty allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings, striking out a season-high seven. He's 0-7 with a 6.66 ERA in his last nine starts, a career-worst losing streak, and 0-4 with a 5.54 ERA against Philadelphia.

Dan Haren has shown no signs of turning around a season-long slump. The right-hander allowed six runs over 3 1/3 innings with seven hits including his 19th home run surrendered and an RBI single to opposing starter Jhoulys Chacin, who pitched seven shutout innings as the Washington Nationals fell to the Colorado Rockies 7-1 on Saturday afternoon. “Same thing that's gone wrong the last few weeks,” Haren (4-9) said after losing his sixth straight decision, which snapped Washington's three-game winning streak.

A woeful showing at the plate while losing two of three games to the Braves has left the Washington Nationals below .500 and with an embarrassing .229 batting average. Davey Johnson hopes help is coming this week. The Nationals managed only five hits in Sunday's 6-3 loss, and dropped 6 1/2 games behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East. The Nationals were held to only seven runs in the series. “Half the ballclub is not doing things they're capable of offensively,” Johnson said.
