HAGERSTOWN -- Eight people were taken to Washington County Hospital after they were injured in a four-vehicle accident at about 3:55 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Eastern Boulevard and Potomac Avenue, near Long Meadow Shopping Center, in Hagerstown, a Washington County Emergency Services dispatcher said. Further details were not immediately available.

Northbound Interstate 81 at the Potomac River bridge was closed for a time Tuesday morning as a result of an accident on the bridge, a Washington County 911 dispatcher said. No one was hurt in the accident, which occurred at about 7 a.m., but a passenger vehicle did leak oil onto the bridge deck, which required clean-up by the Williamsport Volunteer Fire Co., the dispatcher said. One lane was re-opened shortly after the crash occurred and both lanes were open by about 8 a.m., the dispatcher said.

Westbound Interstate 70 was shut down between Exit 24 and Interstate 81 due to a single-vehicle accident, a Washington County 911 dispatcher said. Occupants of the vehicle were being checked for minor injuries, the dispatcher said. The accident occurred about 3:35 p.m. in the westbound lanes, the dispatcher said. At 4:15, traffic was backed up past the exit for Md. 65, according to motorist. I-70 was reopened at 4:30 p.m.

There was a property damage incident Tuesday morning on Summit Avenue, a supervisor for Washington County Emergency Services reported. Police were dispatched to the scene around 10:50 a.m. No one was injured, police said. By 11:10 a.m., the scene had been cleared.

A 35-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-vehicle crash Monday night in the 3900 block of Shepherdstown Road in Berkeley County. The man suffered from blunt-force trauma after being thrown from a BMW he was driving, Berkeley County Medical Examiner Donald Shirley said. Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Department joined West Virginia State Police at the site of the crash, which prompted officials to shut down the road. The accident was reported at 8:44 p.m., according to a Berkeley County 911 Central Dispatch supervisor.

BLUE RIDGE SUMMIT, Pa. -- A motorcycle rider was airifted from the scene of an accident Monday night at 13252 Old Route 16, Washington Township Police said in a news release. The accident was reported at 10:13 p.m., police said. A 2007 Suzuki motorcycle operated by Daniel Naugle, 22, of 11326 Old Route 16, Waynesboro, Pa., was traveling east when it missed a curve and the cycle fell onto its side and slid into a guardrail, police said. Naugle, who was not wearing a helmet, was seriously injured, police said.

Police are closing the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 at exit 16 (U.S. 30) in Franklin County, Pa., south of Chambersburg, because of a crash involving an overturned vehicle, a Franklin County emergency dispatcher said. The crash was reported at about 8:30 p.m. A vehicle was overturned near the 15-mile marker, the dispatcher said. No other information was available.

One person was injured Thursday morning in an accident involving a bicyclist on Mapleville Road (Md. 66), Cpl. Shusko of the Maryland State Police said. The accident happened in front of the Sheetz store at the intersection of Mapleville Road and National Pike (U.S. 40), east of Hagerstown. Shusko said the bicyclist heading southbound in the shoulder lane of Mapleville Road attempted to turn in front of a car heading in the same direction just past the intersection. The bicyclist was taken to Meritus Medical Center in an ambulance from Boonsboro with minor injuries, according to Shusko.
