The Associated Builders and Contractors Inc., Cumberland Valley Chapter, held its annual Excellence in Construction Awards program Oct. 17 at Fountain Head Country Club in Hagerstown. The Awards of Excellence competition sponsored by ABC recognizes and publicizes outstanding projects built by members of the association. Awards were presented to the following first-place winners of Excellence in Construction awards: Category C, Institution over $1 million - Callas Contractors, Hagerstown, for The Richard A. Henson Family YMCA.

andrews@herald-mail.com HAGERSTOWN - The state of Maryland is giving the vacant Hagerstown Armory at 328 N. Potomac St. to a construction trade group, two years after a similar agreement fell through. The State Military Department will give the 78-year-old armory to the City of Hagerstown, which will transfer it to Associated Builders and Contractors Inc., Cumberland Valley Chapter, at no cost. ABC plans to open a building skills training center there. State Sen. Donald F. Munson, R-Washington, announced the transaction Wednesday morning at a Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce breakfast forum in Halfway.

LeRoy Myers told a group of building and contracting graduates they probably wouldn't have to worry about finding work. "When was the last time you read in the paper that Washington County has no need for plumbers?" Myers said. "There's always going to be a need for people in your (fields). " Myers, R-Washington/Allegany, was the guest speaker at the Cumberland Valley Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors Inc.'s Apprenticeship Class of 2005 graduation Thursday night.

The following were recognized: Excellence in Construction, First Place · Category A1, commercial over $1 million, Warner Construction, Frederick, Md., for project on Whittier Center.

The Awards of Excellence competition sponsored by ABC is designed to recognize and publicize outstanding projects built by members of the association. Awards were presented to the following first-place winners in the Excellence in Construction Awards: Category A-1, Commercial more than $1 million - Harkins Builders, Marriottsville, Md., for its work on Gateway Crossing Phase I. Category B-1, Industrial Construction more than $1 million - Warner Construction, Frederick, Md., for work on the Kennedy Fire Protection Building.

The Cumberland Valley Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. has installed its officers and board of directors for 2009. The officers are M. James Rock, chairman; Robert Dale Householder, chairman-elect; Darrell D. Brechbill, past chairman; Joan L. Warner, president; Greg W. Brown, secretary; and Timothy R. Campbell, treasurer. Members of the board of directors are Berneice D. Collis, Ken E. Kline, Will O. Seilhamer, Larry W. Fellows, Dave L. Semler, Stephen W. Larue, Larry W. Rydbom, Eric J. Hulett and Robert E. Heilig.

The Cumberland Valley Technology Center, the education division of the Cumberland Valley Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors, is accepting applications for apprenticeship, craft training, maintenance, upgrade and industrial classes. The center offers training in carpentry, electrical, HVAC-R, roofing, plumbing, welding, pipefitting, sprinklerfitting, sheet metal, heavy equipment operator, ironworker, concrete finishing/cement mason, masonry, painter and insulation. The program is registered with the U.S. Department of Labor, the Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia Apprenticeship and Training Councils and the Veterans Administration.

The adults and children who made their national television debut Thursday night watched their performance on ABC-TV's "The American Game" for the first time. Not everyone was happy. "We feel kind of betrayed. We invited these people into our homes," said Lisa McAfee, whose husband was shown scolding his son and exchanging tense words with ABC anchor Peter Jennings. For the most part, though, the coaches and parents of Hagerstown's National Little League said they felt the 90-minute special fairly portrayed them.
