Joseph Louis Pennella, 74, of Boonsboro, Md., passed away on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at his home.

He was born Dec. 20, 1938, in Scranton, Pa., to the late Angelo and Esther Falgione Pennella.

He was a 1956 graduate of Old Forge High School, Old Forge, Pa.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines.

After his military service he was employed by the federal government with two agencies, the Library of Congress and the former U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Washington, D.C., until his retirement.

He was a Catholic.

His granddaughters were his pride and joy.

He was a member of Clopper Michael Post No. 10 American Legion, Boonsboro, Md.

He enjoyed horse racing, and was a racehorse owner and breeder. He was a member of Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association Charles Town Racetrack.


Survivors include his wife, Rhea M. Wenk Pennella of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; daughter, Jocelyn L. Pennella Doyle and her husband, Jeffrey, of Boonsboro, Md.; son, Joseph L. Pennella of White Plains, Md.; son, Jason L. Pennella and his wife, Kathy, of Connecticut; son, Justin L. Pennella and his wife, Kara, of Ohio; sister, Anita Kolesar of Old Forge, Pa.; and granddaughters, Jenna L. Pennella and Jillian A. Doyle.

Services and burial will be private.
