WAYNESBORO, Pa. — The Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro is hosting its first “Run for God” 5K and one-mile children’s fun run Saturday, Oct. 12.

The races tie into both an ongoing Bible study and the church’s WayFest. The festival features food, children’s games and bands.

Funds will be raised for Waynesboro Human & Community Services, Pregnancy Ministries Inc., New Hope Shelter, Waynesboro Area YMCA children’s programs, and Young Life.

Sarah Stains is one of the volunteers organizing the events.

“Last August we had a small-scale missions fair. We kind of developed this from there and knew we wanted to build on that,” she said.

WayFest will be held in the church’s parking lot behind 105 E. Main St. starting at noon.

The one-mile children’s fun run starts at 10:30 a.m. The 5K run/walk starts at 11 a.m. Their paths will mimic the route used for Waynesboro’s Firecracker 5K.

Stains said the church hopes to have 100 to 150 runners.

The church is in the midst of a “Run for God” Bible study being held at the Waynesboro Area YMCA. It is a program designed to help participants both spiritually and physically.

“It uses a program similar to the couch-to-5K program. Every week you have a Bible study that puts faith and endurance together, and it also tells you different things you need to know about running,” said facilitator Capulet Williams, noting lessons include information about stretching, shoes and nutrition.

Many of the approximately 15 participants are looking to make lifestyle changes through the 12-week program, Williams said. They are signing up for the race, she said.

Preregistration for the races is encouraged, but not required.

Fees vary based on a Sept. 15 preregistration date and whether the runner wants apparel. To register, visit www.waypres.com or call 717-762-1841.
