Alleged bank robber crashes into tree, dies after Pa. pursuit

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A man police said robbed a bank in Franklin County later died and several troopers were injured after a pursuit that ended in Cumberland County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

State police responded to an armed robbery of an M&T Bank at 1798 Lincoln Way East in Guilford Township, Pa., shortly before 5 p.m. Monday, state police spokesman Trooper Robert Hicks said in a news release.

The male suspect in the 4:52 p.m. robbery was driving a black minivan spotted by a trooper, Hicks said.

“The trooper was injured in this pursuit, and contact with the vehicle was lost,” Hicks said.

Police spotted the vehicle again and chased it with assistance from helicopters, he said.

“Multiple troopers” were injured before the suspect crashed into a tree on Roxbury Road in the Newville, Pa., area, he said.

The suspect died in the crash, according to Hicks.

None of the troopers suffered life-threatening injuries, he said.

“The situation is stable and is currently under investigation by state police, the Franklin County and Cumberland County district attorneys, and the Cumberland County coroner,” Hicks said in the release.

Cumberland County, Pa., emergency services officials had warned residents to stay indoors.

A news conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. today in Cumberland County.
