An informational meeting on the ongoing Robinwood Drive Corridor II construction project is set for Tuesday night at Hagerstown Community College’s Kepler Center, according to a Washington County official.

County Public Affairs Manager James Jenkins said the meeting, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., will provide an overview of the various phases of the project, which includes the widening of Robinwood Drive and installing a roundabout at the entrance to HCC.

Robert Slocum, the county’s deputy director of public works, will be on hand to answer questions.

“We’re getting calls on a daily basis regarding the process,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins said the meeting, which he stressed is not a public hearing, is to provide answers to questions from the general public, as well as HCC students who might be affected by the ongoing work.

People attending the meeting will be asked to write questions on a piece of paper upon entering the meeting to filter out repeat inquiries, Jenkins said. The county will answer as many questions as possible during the meeting, which is expected to last about an hour.

The county also will provide additional details on how motorists who frequent the area can stay up-to-date on the project that is expected to be completed by mid-November 2014.

Jenkins said the county will be utilizing social media, email and text alerts to provide updates to the public on the phases of the project and potential lane closures. More information on how to sign up for those updates will be provided at the meeting, he said.

The corridor-improvement project will expand an approximately one-mile stretch of Robinwood Drive from two lanes to four between the entrances of Meritus Medical Center on Medical Campus Road and HCC on Academic Boulevard.

When completed, Robinwood Drive will be a four-lane divided roadway between the two intersections, and the roundabout at HCC will replace the current signalized intersection with Youngstoun Drive.

County officials have said the project will require some temporary lane closures during various stages of the widening and paving processes, but access will be maintained throughout the project, which got under way a couple months ago.

The nearly $7.8 million construction contract was awarded in June to Milani Construction LLC, based in Washington, D.C.

Milani officials have said they expect to subcontract about 23 percent of the overall work to local companies, including between $1.5 million and $2 million for paving.

The Robinwood Drive work is part of a multiphase transportation-improvement project to relieve traffic congestion and increase travel capacity for the proposed Mt. Aetna Technology Park on former farmland between Meritus and HCC.

The project aims to accommodate daily traffic of approximately 17,000 vehicles currently using the corridor and attract new business by providing “an inviting, infrastructure-ready location for smart growth,” according to a news release from the county.
