Robert Lee "Snapper" Ainsworth, 79, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson, W.Va.

Born Aug. 28, 1934, in Harpers Ferry, he was the son of the late James Albert Ainsworth and Elsie Lee Myers Ainsworth.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

He retired from the National Park Service in Harpers Ferry as an equipment operator with 32 years of service.

He was a member of American Legion Post 71 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948, both of Charles Town, W.Va., and a lifetime member of Friendship Fire Co. in Harpers Ferry.

Snapper enjoyed his retirement, watching the deer, and especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving companion of 30 years, Elaine Wiest of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two daughters, Rita Sword and husband, Rick, of Hagerstown, Md., and Glenda Ainsworth of Hagerstown; two sons, Jon Ainsworth of Harpers Ferry, and Robert "Tater" Ainsworth and wife, Sue, of Mercersburg, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Elizabeth Fritts, Peggy Fauble and June Taulton; and four brothers, Junior Ainsworth, Kibbie Ainsworth, Howard "Skeets" Ainsworth and Frank Ainsworth.

Services will be Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Eackles-Spencer and Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, with Pastor Ed Hall officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
