Charles Lindbergh Bean, 86, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born June 29, 1927, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Archie Samuel and Susan Elizabeth Kretzer Bean.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Bertha (Sylvia) Mae Bean; sister, Vivian Knick; brothers, Harold E. Bean, Eston Bean and Archie Samuel Bean (Jr.); and his three companions, Jacob, Tilly and Bear.

He is survived by his son, Charles Timothy Bean and wife, Norma; his daughter, Sandra Mae Tressler and husband, Clyde; grandsons, Clyde Charles Tressler and Juan Trevino; granddaughters, Melissa K. Smith, Lorie Trevino, Jennifer A. Everts and wife, Jennifer D. Everts, and Crystal Reichenbaugh. He also had 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was a life member of Western Enterprise Fire Co., where he served on the board of trustees. He was also a member of the Funkstown Lions Club, The Alsatia Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AMVETS Post 10 and the Funkstown American Legion Post 211.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving under Gen. George Patton. After he was discharged, he re-enlisted.

He retired from Hagerstown city government in 1980 as a foreman for the street department after a career of 30 years.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Chaplain and retired U.S. Army Col. Richard W. Bower will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Washington County AMVETS Post 10 and the Marine Corps League of Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.
