Hagerstown couple wins $50,000 Bonus Match 5 lottery

September 03, 2013

A Hagerstown couple who won $50,000 in a numbers game called Bonus Match 5 will use the money to pay off their daughter’s car and some small bills, according to the Maryland Lottery.

Ralph and Nancy Lapole of Hagerstown celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary by driving to Baltimore to claim the prize.

Bonus Match 5 is a numbers game in which five winning numbers ranging from one to 39 are drawn nightly, lottery officials said.

“I play every day,” Ralph Lapole said on the lottery website.

Lapole, who volunteers with the Hagerstown Police Department, said on the website that he and his wife were “usually pretty lucky, but we’ve never won this much.”

“When we matched four numbers the last two times, we won $1,000,” Nancy Lapole said on the website. “For some reason I thought we won $2,000.”

But the couple were taken by surprise when a store clerk informed them that their ticket was worth $50,000.

The couple bought the winning ticket at United Petroleum, located at 890 Pennsylvania Ave. in Hagerstown, lottery officials said.

Nancy Lapole has shared the news with her co-workers at an area nursing home.

“They all crowded around when I told them,” she said on the website.
