Antietam Tours to host Wine Trail guided tours

September 03, 2013

Antietam Tours will operate guided tours and transportation to four of the five wineries on the Antietam Highlands Wine Trail in Western Maryland. Tours will begin Saturday, Sept. 7. There are six tours scheduled for September and October, and groups of at least six may create custom tour packages for other dates.

“This is the best way I can think of to tour our region’s wine offerings. Not only will participants experience most of our wonderful wineries, they’ll get expert tour guide service from the experienced staff at Antietam Tours. This is an extraordinary journey combining agro-tourism, history and heritage tales, and unmatched Maryland scenic beauty,” said Tom Riford, president and chief executive officer of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Antietam Highlands Wine Trail, one of six scenic wine trails in Maryland, encompasses portions of Washington and Frederick counties in Maryland and currently boasts five wineries: Big Cork Vineyards, Knob Hall Winery, Orchid Cellar Winery, Red Heifer Winery and Distillery Lane Ciderworks.

Each day-long tour includes transportation to and from Hagerstown or Frederick, Md., cold bottled water and snacks on the bus and a tasting at each location. The tastings at Orchid Cellar and Distillery Lane Ciderworks include a souvenir wine glass. Participants will enjoy lunch (not included in tour fee) at The Main Cup in Middletown, Md., and, if time allows, make a stop at Allenberg Orchards near Smithsburg for fresh, locally grown produce.

Scheduled dates are Saturdays: Sept. 7, Sept. 21, Oct. 12, Oct. 19 and Oct. 26.

Tour price is $69 per person. Reservations are required.
