September 02, 2013

Residents and businesses were recognized Aug. 27 at the mayor and Hagerstown City Council’s regular session as part of the annual Highlight Hagerstown Awards.

The Hagerstown Beautification Advisory Committee recognizes citizens and organizations that are instrumental in boosting the curb appeal of the city of Hagerstown through landscaping and/or facade improvements at their property.

The awards are given based on a number of factors, including decorative fencing, walkway improvements, flowerbeds and gardens, window boxes and facade improvements. The features must be visible from public streets to be considered.

The following earned awards in the residential category:

  • Siegfried Schletterer, 1400 Potomac Ave.
  • Nicole Ribis, 547 Church St.
  • CBS Housing Inc., 30-32 S. Mulberry St.
  • Jon and Dot Kalback, 32 McKee Ave.

Burkett’s Deli was also recognized in the business category for its outdoor dining area addition that features landscaping and decorative fencing. Burkett’s also made enhancements to the front of the business with planters and lighting.

In 2009, the city launched the Adopt-A-Planter Program, in which businesses and organizations can “adopt” a concrete planner to serve as décor along the sidewalk.

The city maintains ownership of the planter while the adoptees plant and maintain the flowers and greenery.

There are 14 planters that highlight various businesses around the downtown area.

This year, the following businesses were recognized for their planters:

  • Frederick, Seibert and Associates
  • The Gourmet Goat
  • Poole & Kane, P.A.
