Hagerstown resident Julie Miller emailed The Herald-Mail about a sign placed along the northbound lanes of Eastern Boulevard south in Hagerstown.

The sign, on the right-hand side just past the intersection with South Cannon Avenue, reads “Lane Ends Merge Right.” A short distance after the sign, through traffic in the left lane must merge right.

“I think the sign should be located on the left side of the northbound lanes of Eastern Boulevard,” Miller said in an email.

In response, City Engineer Rodney Tissue said in an email Wednesday that the sign’s current placement is correct in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, or MUTCD, which states “signs should be located on the right-hand side of the roadway.”

“That said, the MUTCD allows for a supplemental sign where a median of sufficient width exists,” Tissue said. “We can add an additional sign — where the median is wide enough to accept it — on the left side, since it is the left lane that is merging.”

Tissue said a work order would be issued to city Public Works staff to install the supplemental sign.
