Quincy Ox Roast all about food, friends and fun

QUINCY, Pa. — It’s always about food, friends and fun at the Quincy Ox Roast, and Saturday was no exception.

As soon as the kitchen opened at 4 p.m. at the Ox Roast Association grounds off Pa. 997 north of Waynesboro, Pa., crowds rushed to the screened windows for scrumptious roast beef and gravy sandwiches, ox burgers and french fries browned to perfection.

While Lisa Price’s roast beef dinner still was piping hot, she headed to the condiment table and seasoned it to perfection.

Her $5.75 hot beef dinner was topped with gravy and french fries.

Price and her mother, Beverly Barnhart of Waynesboro, come every year.

“I come for the food,” Price said.

In addition to enjoying the delicious food, Price also volunteers at the bingo table.

About 2,200 pounds of beef will be prepared by the end of the event, according to organizers.

The annual event has been held every Labor Day weekend since 1934.

Without fail, it usually rains at the ox roast.

“Oh, what’s a little rain?” said Betty Wolford of Fayetteville, Pa.

She and her husband, Jeff, were spicing up a couple of ox burgers with fixings from the table containing onions, ketchup, mustard and horseradish before darting to a nearby pavilion for cover from the rain.

Jeff Wolff, vice president of the Quincy Ox Roast Association, said it usually rains one day during the event.

Even when it rains, Wolff said ox roast enthusiasts don’t mind.

“They duck under a pavilion or play bingo until the rain slows down,” he said. “Most of the people (who come) are local. When it’s done raining, they come back because we don’t charge to park or anything.”

Just like the rain, another constant of the ox roast is family.

Parents and grandparents participate in the event together, Wolff said.

“It’s a good thing to teach them (kids) that you need to learn to give back as much as take,” he said

Pulling off the annual ox roast is quite an undertaking, Wolff said.

“It takes a lot of volunteers,” he said.

He estimated that over the four-day period, about 400 volunteers are needed to make the ox roast a success.

For the past eight years, Wolff said the Waynesboro Area girls softball team has supplied all of the help in the soda stand.

Dave “Sonny” Monn was one of the more than 25 volunteers constantly in motion in the ox roast kitchen.

“That’s how a 79-year-old does it,” Monn joked as he flipped burgers with perfect precision.

Monn managed to answer a few questions, but he never took his eyes off his grill.

“I guess I’ve been helping for about 10 to 12 years,” he said. “I came down from Mont Alto (fire department) to help. I go to church with these people.”

Despite the heat and fast-paced atmosphere of the kitchen, Monn said he wouldn’t want to spend his Labor Day weekend anywhere else.

“Helping out the community is the right thing to do. I like helping,” he said.

The event raises money for the Quincy Community Ox Roast Association to pay the bill for Quincy’s 60 to 70 streetlights and other activities.

The ox roast continues today and Monday.
