John W. Koons, 69

John Wesley Koons, 69, of Stanley, Va., went to be with the Lord on Aug. 28, 2013, at Life Care Center in New Market, Va., where he had been a patient for the last two months.

John was born Jan. 26, 1944, in Waynesboro, Pa., son of the late Watson Eugene Koons and Helen Marie Kauffman Koons Shockey. He was a 1961 graduate of Waynesboro High School. 

John spent many years in the printing industry in various roles, including salesperson to well-known clients such as NOW and Ralph Nader. After leaving the printing industry, he was employed as store manager for The Room Store in Fredericksburg, Falls Church and Winchester, Va. He retired in 2008.

John was a member of Leakes Chapel Church of the Brethren, where he had served as president of the men’s fellowship, a member of the choir and also a deacon.


John loved to travel, draw and paint, ride his motorcycle and play golf, and he always enjoyed a good laugh. He was known for his generosity and sense of humor.

On April 3, 1993, he married the former Karen Michele Painter, who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Kimberly Bain of Waynesboro and her fiancé, Carl Succa, and Michelle Black of Waynesboro. Other survivors include three grandchildren, Sarah Bain, Branden Coleman and MacKenzie Coleman, all of Waynesboro; his nephews, Charles Koons, Donald Koons and Robert Koons; his niece and nephew, Allison and Luke Hilliard, of Luray, Va., to whom he was their beloved “Punky John”; his mother-in-law, Delores Painter; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kristi and Joey Hilliard of Luray.  

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, George Eugene Koons.

Funeral services will be conducted at Leakes Chapel Church of the Brethren, 2266 Honeyville Road, Stanley, by Pastor Mark Ray, on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m., with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Leakes Chapel Church of the Brethren Picnic Shelter Fund or to American Cancer Society.
