Memorial service set for Malinda Brown

A memorial service celebrating the life of Malinda Grace Brown will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Greater Campher Temple King’s Apostle Church World Ministries, 125 Bethel St.

Brown, 95, died Aug. 19 at Ravenwood Lutheran Village. 

Representing one of the older families in Hagerstown, she was the last of three daughters born to Grace Harvey.

Malinda was an active member of her church, Greater Campher Temple/King’s Apostle Ministries, serving as a missionary, usher and communication media. She helped in any area she was asked and also was active in the community, caring for the sick and needy and spreading the message of God’s love to family, friends and others she met along the way.

Following the service, a fellowship meal will be served. The community is invited.


End-of-summer bash

Robert W. Johnson Community Center will hold an end-of-the-summer swim bash Saturday from noon to 7 p.m.

The event, which costs $2.50 per person, will include music, food and swimming.

The menu includes hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks for $1 each.

The center is at 109 North Ave. in Hagerstown.

The  community center pool will end its summer season Saturday.

Back-to-school workshop

On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Blossom School of Etiquette will host a back-to-school workshop at Hagerstown Presbyterian Church. 20 S. Prospect St.

Students in elementary, middle school and high school are invited to a day of discussion on topics, such as conflict resolution, volunteerism, personal image, social skills, social media responsibility, values, etiquette, substance abuse, dangerous games, and writing techniques.

The discussions will be conducted by concern citizens in the community.

The highlight will be a fashion show titled “Express Yourself,”  which will be held after the discussion period.

A light breakfast and lunch will be served.

Food distribution

For those who signed up for the Robert W. Johnson Community Center mobile food pantry, the first distribution will be today from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturday  from 9 a.m. to noon.

Tobacco free classes

The Washington County Health Department’s Tobacco Free for Life Program is scheduled to start Monday, Sept. 9.

The classes will meet twice per week on Mondays and Thursday, Sept. 9, Sept. 12, Sept. 16, and Sept. 19, at 13114 Pennsylvania Ave. from 11 a.m. to noon and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Storytelling event

On Sunday,  the Christian Storytelling Café‘s inaugural adult division storytelling contest will be held at 2 p.m. at Port City Java, 1551 Potomac Ave. in Hagerstown. 

The youth division storytelling contest for the 2013-14 school year is being scheduled.

Meetings are held the first Sunday of each month. 

The public is invited. Admission is free.

First Friday Disco

Sharon Temple 160 will host its First Friday Disco Friday, Sept. 6, at 9:30 p.m. at Elks Lodge 278, at 326 N. Jonathan St. 

Admission is $5; however, if you have a valid ID with your birthday in September, the admission is $3.
