WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Scott Shacreaw begins his fourth year as Waynesboro head football coach and is hoping his program is ready to make an upward turn.

It’s been 21 years since the Indians have finished a season above the .500 mark. Their last winning campaign was in 1992, when they went 9-2.

The Indians come off a 3-7 season looking for better fortunes beginning Friday night at East Pennsboro.

Senior Nathan Toney (6-foot, 195 pounds) — who was recently named one of the team’s captains — will be the quarterback in a backfield that needs a replacement for Johnnie Adgers, now at Valley Forge Military Academy. Adgers was one of the bright lights for the Indians, surpassing 1,000 yards in the rushing category.

Shacreaw expects the Indians to play in more of a ball-control fashion, meaning sophomore Brett Mohn (5-10, 160) could see extensive action in the Waynesboro spread offense.

“We want Brett to go out and be Brett,” Shacreaw said. “Last year he spelled (Adgers) when he was hurt and learned quick. He is a good player and just needs more reps.”

The running game could also get a boost with the return of Alex Cline (5-10, 175), who did not play the last two seasons.

Waynesboro lost 18 players to graduation and has only seven seniors on the roster this year. The Indians have three returning starters on both offense and defense.

“We’ve got 13 juniors and 30 sophomores, so we are young,” Shacreaw said. “In the past we were lucky to have 30 to 35 players, but this year we have 50 to 60. With those numbers I can start moving forward more with this program.”

Even with Adgers’ numbers, the Indians didn’t have a lot of offensive output, averaging only 16 points a game last year.

Waynesboro’s success may hinge on its defense showing improvement over last season, when they allowed 31 points per game. Often they were pushed around and quickly fell behind in games.

Senior linebacker Matt Kassman (5-10, 197) and lineman Zach Stumbaugh (6-1, 270) — along with Cline at linebacker — will have leadership responsibilities. The Indians will also have Carlisle transfer Kenny Baker (6-2, 230) in the trenches at nose tackle.

“Defense will be my biggest concern,” Shacreaw said. “I’m hoping we can mix together in the 4-3. Kassman is a strong leader and commands his presence.”

With greater numbers comes the opportunity to have players only playing on one side of the ball. Shacreaw estimated he’d only have three two-way performers, something that is always of benefit to a team from the perspective of staying fresh during a game.

Shacreaw liked what he saw of his team during its visit to the Lebanon Valley College team camp in late July.

“You learn about yourself against these other schools in this kind of setting,” Shacreaw said. “It’s a beneficial time before practice starts.”

Waynesboro also has a new offensive coordinator as Steve Myers — who filled the same role at North Hagerstown — steps into that position.

After the opener, Waynesboro is at home against Chambersburg, which looks to continue its ascent back to being a Mid-Penn power.
