Ready, set, barbecue

On Saturday, the Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. will hold a chicken and pit beef barbecue before the annual duck race.  

There will be chicken and pit beef, along with ham and Italian sausage sandwiches. A baked goods sale also will be held. 

The barbecue begins at 9:30 a.m.

Stick around for the duck race, which begins at 2 p.m. Plastic ducks, which will float down Antietam Creek, are for sale and can be purchased by contacting the fire company.  

There also will be a grocery raffle.

Back-to-school night

South Hagerstown High School will hold its back-to-school night Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. 

Parents and students are invited to attend.  

On Wednesday, Sept. 4, seventh- and eighth-graders and their parents are invited to E. Russell Hicks Middle School for meet-the-teacher night, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Meat bonanza planned for Oct. 13

The South Hagerstown Junior Rebels football team will hold a holiday meat bingo Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at Western Enterprise Fire Co., 526 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown. The doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and bingo will begin at 2 p.m. 

The prizes will consist of hams, turkeys, pork loins, shrimp and other items.  

There will be 29 games of bingo, raffles and tip jars. Attendees must be 16 to play bingo and 18 to play tip jars.  

The kitchen will be open for purchases.  

Tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Advance tickets are available by calling Annette at 301-992-6151 or Theresa Conrad at 301-730-1360.
