Barbara Sowers Thomas of Briarwood Drive, Hagerstown passed away at her home Aug. 19, 2013.

Born May 25, 1927, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Lauran Delk Sowers and Harriet Aline (Harman) Sowers.

Barbara graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1945 and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Western Maryland College in 1949, where she edited the college yearbook her senior year and was named Best All-Around College Woman. She later earned a master’s degree in education from Western Maryland College.

After graduating from college, Barbara taught school for three years, was then a homemaker for 20 years, and in 1972 returned to teaching special education for Washington County Public Schools until her retirement in 1992.

Barbara was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, where she taught Sunday school, served on committees and the church council and, more recently, volunteered for the food pantry and Micah’s Backpack.

She served as a volunteer for the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, Volunteers of America, the Cub Scouts, Habitat for Humanity and the Maryland Symphony Orchestra’s board of directors.

Barbara is survived by her sister, Aline Hoyer and her husband, Edgar; and four sons and their families, Blair and Kathleen Thomas and Blair’s son and grandson, Franklin and Jacob; Mark and Jean Thomas and their children, Josh and Julie; Bruce and Carolyn Thomas and their sons, Christian and Carl; and David Thomas.

Barbara also is survived by four stepchildren, Jeanne “Dusty” Graham, David Clark, Ann Lafferty and John Clark; seven stepgrandchildren, Beth Christensen and Megan Graham; Jamie, Travis and Philip Clark; and Maura and Michael Lafferty; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Allison and Katelyn Christensen, and Ben Clark.

In lieu of flowers, Barbara asked that memorial donations be made to Heifer International or Habitat for Humanity of Washington County.

A memorial service will be Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Hagerstown.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., North, Hagerstown.
