FREDERICK, Md. — A pair of Washington County golfers are at the top of the leaderboard in two categories at the Frederick County Amateur after the first round Saturday at Clustered Spires Golf Club.

In the championship flight, Boonsboro’s Chuck Thatcher posted a 5-under-par 66 for a one-stroke lead over Jon Ross.

In flight one, Williamsport’s Ryan Crabtree worked his way to a 3-under-par 72 and a three-stroke advantage.

The final 18 holes are scheduled for Sunday with Thatcher teeing off at 1:30 p.m. and Crabtree at 9:20 a.m. The championship tees are around 6,900 yards played to par 71 and the flights are at 6,600 to par 72.

Thatcher started his round with two bogeys in the first three holes before he nailed an eagle on the par-4 No. 4 with a flop shot from 30 yards. He also had five birdies for the round.

“I played much the same way as I always do, and the greens were very consistent today,” Thatcher said.

Crabtree broke 70 for the first time ever on any course and it was his first-ever visit to Clustered Spires.

“It was one of those days,” Crabtree said. “I pretty much was able to drive the ball where I wanted.”

Crabtree had six birdies on his card that offset a bogey and a double bogey to gain the lead.
