Community Book Drive announced for Sept.

Nearly 50 businesses, churches, clubs and organizations across Washington County will collect children’s books from Sunday, Sept. 1, through Monday, Sept. 30.

The goal of the book drive is to collect 10,000 books for children ages 11 and younger for use in literacy programs for at-risk children. Books can be new or gently used. A list of recommended books is available for those who are purchasing new books and want ideas.

Youth orchestra sets auditions for Aug. 28

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — The Shepherd University Preparatory Orchestra will hold auditions for its 15th season at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, in the Frank Center for junior and senior preparatory orchestra members. Positions are open in all string sections in both orchestras.

Students wishing to audition on violin or viola will be heard from 6 to 8 p.m. Students wishing to audition on cello or bass will be heard from 8 to 9 p.m. All students will be auditioned on a first-come, first-served basis during the scheduled audition time for their instrument. Other audition times may be scheduled with the consent of the orchestra director.

The tuition fee for the Shepherd youth orchestra is $125 per semester.
