Piwnica-Worms stars in role of sub as Suns sink 'Claws

August 21, 2013

LAKEWOOD, N.J. — Will Piwnica-Worms may not have started, but he sure knew how to finish for the Hagerstown Suns.

Piwnica-Worms scored the winning run on Mike McQuillan’s two-out single in the top of the ninth inning on Wednesday to lift the Suns to a 4-3 over the Lakewood BlueClaws.

Piwnica-Worms replaced center fielder Narciso Mesa in the top of the second inning and responded with two hits and an RBI, along with scoring the winning run.

The victory — the Suns’ ninth in the last 11 games — allowed Hagerstown (75-51, 37-22) to remain a half-game ahead of West Virginia in the South Atlantic League Northern Division second-half standings. The Power defeated Charleston 7-4 on Wednesday.

The Suns have already won the first half championship and are in the upcoming Northern Divison playoffs, but a sweep of the titles would make it three straight for the franchise.

Lakewood starter Delvi Francisco (3-5) hit Piwnica-Worms with a pitch to open the ninth. He took second on Shawn Pleffner’s single and took third on Estarlin Martinez’s grounder to short.

McQuillan lined a single to center for the go-ahead run.

Justin Thomas (1-0) pitched the final two innings of relief for the Suns to earn the win. He was the third pitcher of the game behind starter Pedro Encarnacion.

Hagerstown took an early 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the first two innings off Lakewood starter Jeb Stefan.

Mesa led off the game with a single and came around to score on hits by Tony Renda and Martinez for the 1-0 lead.

The Suns scored in the second as Pedro Severino walked and took second on a wild pitch before scoring on Piwnica-Worms’ single.

Lakewood tied the game in the fourth on a two-run double by Zach Taylor and took a 3-2 lead in the seventh when J.P. Crawford scored on Christian Meza’s wild pitch.

Hagerstown tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth on back-to-back one-out doubles by Khayyan Norfork and Stephen Perez.
