Mail Call - Aug. 22

August 21, 2013

“I would like to know when the senior center is going to open up. Somebody quit lollygagging around with it. Are you waiting on us seniors to kick the bucket? ... Let’s get the place open, OK?”
— Smithsburg

“I’m so glad to see in the paper this morning, ‘New stadium proposal given to Va. city,’ and the Suns have partnered with a company and plans to finance and build a complex in Fredericksburg. I’m so tired of every day there’s something in there about the stadium and the Suns. It’ll be good riddance, way I feel about it.”
— Washington County

“After reading the article in The Herald-Mail about Doug Gansler and Anthony Brown both wanting to run for governor, are you kidding me? I don’t want either one of these two guys to be governor, after eight years of total mismanagement by one of the most incompetent politicians I’ve ever laid eyes on, in Martin O’Malley, and they want to continue this tax-and-spend in Maryland? It’s time to clean these guys out.”
— Hagerstown

“I live in Smithsburg, and love to sit on my front porch on West Water Street, these nice evenings. But as I sit there, I wonder if I am not in Dover or Richmond racetrack. The cars go by here at least 50 mph. Where are the police? Also, isn’t there an ordinance against scooters and skateboards in the middle of the street? With cars going this fast and them in the street, someone is going to get hurt. Mayor and council, please have your police enforce the laws and keep our town safe.”
— Smithsburg

“Been reading in today’s paper where some professional golfers are tired of hearing spectators scream nonsense, after hitting a shot. Gentlemen golfers, you never had it so good. How about drug testing, how about carrying your own bag? ... You have drinks, towels, candy; just ask your caddy. The ball is on a tee or on the ground. It takes you 5 1/2 hours to play on Sunday. Try hitting  a 98 mph fastball in baseball, with 49,000 people screaming at you. So I say enjoy the game. ... Leave the fans alone.”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“The next time you have a chance to look at the western horizon on a clear evening, watch the Suns set. The Suns are setting their way to move out of Hagerstown. Thank God.”
— Hagerstown

“Well, the Suns did it. As much as I hate to see them go, they’ve been an asset to the community, good riddance. Where was this secret partner that was going to fund the project, where was it at? All of a sudden they got a new stadium in Fredericksburg and this secret partner showed up. I hate to tell you, council, mayor ... they had a secret financier in the wings the whole time, just waiting for the right spot. Sorry.”
— Hagerstown

“I was reading in the Monday Herald-Mail, there’s a complaint about the flush tax and the rain taxes being rather silly taxes. Has anyone actually done any studies to find out if the people who live on and around the Chesapeake Bay object at all to swimming in our sewage? I think we should have studies to find out.”
— Washington County
