Thanks to all for support of Fix JB Sports campaign

To the editor:

The fall sports season is under way at James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg, and there is much excitement in the air. More than 200 student-athletes are practicing and conditioning each day. The James Buchanan Athletic Booster Association, which has been conducting the Fix JB Sports Capital Campaign, believes this is the perfect time to thank some supporters for their key efforts this past year.

Since 2010, the campaign has raised almost $1.1 million in pledges and donations to renovate and upgrade the aging athletic facilities for student and community use. In partnership with Tuscarora School District, the campaign has provided key funding for a new track, tennis courts and competition soccer field, as well as pool-area renovations. And the beautiful new Edwards Concession Building at Rocket Stadium will greet visitors this fall.

The first annual Flannery’s Pub Run Half Marathon between Mercersburg and Greencastle was held April 13. More than 250 runners and sponsors raised $7,000 for each Fix JB Sports and Greencastle-Antrim’s G-A Maax campaign. Deep thanks to the leadership team of John Flannery, Rich Secrest, Vernon McCauley and Jason Cotton. Their vision, determination and hard work resulted in a very successful race. Thank you also to the many volunteers.

The new concession building could not have been completed without the generous donations of time, labor and materials made by the following businesses and individuals: Jason Shindle Engineering & Design; David Leidy Woodworking; Foremost Industries; Douglas Metzler Building & Remodeling; Melvin Gelsinger-Elite Construction; Lee and Jason Rife Electrical; Roy Rummel Concrete; Shelly & Witter Inc. Surveying; Dean Heinbaugh Masonry; Laurich Building Supply; Rosy’s Wastewater Removal; Gary Deshong; Ralph Lehman; Eric Johnston Engineering; Mark Heckman-Parnell Cabinet Shop; and Valley Quarries.

Special thanks to Doug Metzler, who acted as the general contractor and donated many hours to keep the project moving and on schedule. Also, thank you to the Friday and Saturday “Work Days” volunteers.

And thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Fix JB Sports Capital Campaign in any way. We still have some projects to complete, but we are confident that together we can reach our goals for our children, our community and our future.
