Lucille Miller O’Brien, 95, of Hagerstown passed away to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at Williamsport Retirement Village, surrounded by her loving family and pastor.

Born Dec. 18, 1917, in Shepherdstown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William E. Miller Sr. and Mabel (Price) Miller.

Her devoted husband of 66 years, Harry Austin O’Brien, preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 2006.

Lucille had an amazing career in nursing. She graduated from Washington County Training School for Nurses on Nov. 2, 1938, in a class of 13. She made an extraordinary difference to many at Washington County Hospital, Western Maryland Hospital, Avalon Manor and Kemp Horn Home, where she was the director. The residents there lovingly called her “Missy O.”

Besides her nursing career, Lucille’s life revolved around her family, her love of church and her home, in which she took great pride. Nothing pleased her more than to prepare a big meal with her family gathered around the table. She passed along a legacy of love and the importance of family to her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of Maranatha Brethren Church. Over the years, she was active in the Ambassadors Sunday school class and enjoyed organizing altar flowers, as well as assisting her husband, Harry, with the bus ministry.

She is survived by a son, Pat O’Brien and wife, Cindy, of Hagerstown and daughter, Jan Young and husband, Glenn, of Williamsport, Md.; a sister, Marguerite Shields of Elkins, W.Va., and one brother, Daniel Miller of Adamstown, Md. She is also survived by seven grandchildren — her pride and joy! — including John Davidson and wife, Kalli, Jodi “Cefie” Bennett and husband, Jason, Arys Kate Smith and husband, Kyle, Michael O’Brien and fiancee, Samantha “Sam” Rossignol, and Ben O’Brien and girlfriend, Hannah “Hannah Honey” Letwinsky; a great-granddaughter, Kamryn Lynne Davidson (her little sweetface); and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Harry, Lucille was preceded in death by her son, Douglas P. O’Brien; three sisters, Helen Foutz, Joyce Baker and Katheryne (Billie) McNeal; and six brothers, James Miller, William E. Miller Jr., Stuart L. Miller, Guy Holland Miller, Lewis Miller and Thomas Miller.

The family wishes to thank her faithful caregivers, Connie and Lois, for their love and dedication during the last year and a half in her home, as well as her faithful neighbor, Rich Posch.

Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Maranatha Brethren Church on Scott Hill Drive in Hagerstown, with Pastor Ron Shank officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, from 6:30  to 8:30 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made to Maranatha Church of the Brethren, 19835 Scott Hill Drive, Hagerstown, MD 21742; or Arc of Washington County, 820 Florida Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
