9/11 memorial service set for Sept. 8 at Letterkenny

August 21, 2013

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — The United Churches of the Chambersburg Area and its Franklin County Veterans and 9/11 Memorial Park Committee, will conduct a 9/11 memorial service near the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on America.

The chapel service will be Sunday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. at the Letterkenny chapel at Letterkenny Army Depot in  Chambersburg.

The guest speakers will be U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., and Terry L. Shaffer, retired chief of the Shanksville (Pa.) Volunteer Fire Department. Shaffer served in that position during the 9/11 crash of United Airlines Flight 93, which took the lives of 40 passengers and crew members.

Music will be presented by David Wenerd and the Falling Spring Brass Choir, Marcel Coates and the Community Chorus, and organist Patti Plasterer.

Immediately following the memorial service, the Emergency Medical Services flag display will be raised and the 9/11 memorial time capsule will be dedicated.

The raising of the sponsored EMS flag display completes 12 of the planned 13 flag displays at the Veterans and 9/11 Memorial Park.

The law enforcement flag display has yet to be sponsored and raised.

A chicken barbecue will be held Sunday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the former Jennings Chevrolet dealership parking lot, corner of North Second and Grant streets. Smith’s BBQ will serve chicken, and all after-cost proceeds will help fund the police flag display, which honors fallen and current police officers.

The committee hopes to raise the police flag display at the Veterans Day service on Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Letterkenny chapel.
