Robert J. “Bob” Nelling Jr., 70, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Aug. 17, 2013, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Jan. 3, 1943, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was a son of the late Robert J. Nelling Sr. and Verna Louise Mellott Nelling.

As a youth, he attended Fort Loudon Methodist Church.

Bob was a 1960 graduate of James Buchanan High School.

As a barber school student in Harrisburg, Pa., he served as a page at the state capitol. He opened Nelling’s Barber Shop in Mercersburg in 1966, and worked continuously until June of this year. He loved and appreciated his customers.

He served in the U.S. Army Reserves, and was a member of Moose Lodge 1790, Veterans of Foreign Wars 6241 and American Legion 517, all of Mercersburg.

A thoroughbred horse trainer, Bob owned and trained race horses in his earlier years. He enjoyed his farmette and gardening, loved to cook and was completely devoted to his wife and family.

Surviving family include his wife of 48 years, Shirley S. Shatzer Nelling; daughter, Angela L. and husband, Mitchell J. Poffenberger; sons, Robert J. “Bobby” III and wife, Jan Nelling, and Jason J. N. Nelling, all of Mercersburg; four grandchildren, Rachel and Dylan Poffenberger, and Morgan and Landon Nelling; sister, Victoria and husband, Robert Fisher, of Salisbury, N.C.; and brother, Timothy A. and wife, Joan Nelling, of Hagerstown. Also surviving are 14 nieces and nephews.

There will be no viewing; however, the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, at the funeral home, with Pastors Leon Yoder and David Grove officiating.

Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
