MCTC inmate flown by helicopter from prison after being stabbed

August 19, 2013

A medevac helicopter was called to the Maryland Correctional Training Center on Roxbury Road south of Hagerstown following a report of an inmate being stabbed Monday night, according to a Washington County 911 dispatcher.

The call came in at 9:06 p.m., the dispatcher said.

Mark Vernarelli, a spokesman for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, said he had few details, except that the inmate’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

It is the third stabbing incident reported at state prisons in Washington County since July.

On July 8, two inmates suffered stab wounds in an incident at Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagerstown. One was taken to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown for treatment, while the other had superficial wounds.

Later that week, another inmate was stabbed at that prison and taken to Meritus Medical Center.

In March another inmate at MCI-H, Deavel M. Johnson, 22, died at Meritus Medical Center of stab wounds he sustained at the prison.
