Gas prices continue to decline in Washington County, Maryland and nation

Gas prices dropped 6 cents a gallon in Hagerstown this week, the fourth consecutive week they have fallen locally and nationally.

The average price of regular grade gas per gallon on Monday in Hagerstown was $3.51 a gallon, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report online at fuelgaugereport.opisnet.com.

The prices averaged out at $3.55 a gallon throughout the state of Maryland and $3.53 nationwide on Monday.

Malik Burnett-el, 50, of Hagerstown said that the drop in gas prices has been helpful for him and his wife, because they like to go on vacation often, have to commute to work in separate vehicles and just moved to another place in the city.

“With the transition, the gas prices have helped us get stable,” he said. “Hopefully, it’ll drop a little bit more.”

However, Terry Beckett, 38, of Hagerstown said that the drop in gas prices has not affected her, because she does not have to fill up often with a Toyota Prius hybrid that uses gas and electric power.

“I very rarely have to put gas in my car, so I don’t pay attention to that kind of stuff,” she said. “It’s awesome.”

Despite the continual drop in gas prices this month, there is still uncertainty over what could happen for the rest of the month, the AAA said in its Mid-Atlantic Weekend Gas Watch.

Storms in the Atlantic and Gulf Coast could still possibly drive up prices, as could tensions in the Middle East, the AAA said.

Christine Sarames Delise, public affairs specialist for AAA Mid-Atlantic, said that gasoline prices could “seesaw as the summer driving season draws to an end.”

On Monday, prices in Hagerstown ranged from $3.45 a gallon at the Pilot Travel Center on Greencastle Pike, to $3.59 a gallon at the Sheetz stations on East Washington Street, Potomac Avenue, Eastern Boulevard, South Potomac Street and Lager Drive, according to the AAA Fuel Price Finder online at aaa.opisnet.com/index.aspx.

On average Monday, mid-grade gas in Hagerstown was $3.64 a gallon, premium was $3.82 and diesel was $3.85.
