Mail Call - Aug. 19

August 18, 2013

“Just wondering what ever happened to firing squads for traitors.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m calling in regard to the man who was inquiring about the ducklings. I saw them on Sunday, going up in to Emma K. Doub school. There were just three of them. I also would like to know, if you have empty prescription bottles, is there anyplace here in town that would take the empty prescription bottles, because I have a lot of them.”
— Hagerstown

“I read the letter to the editor, the gentleman running for the 6th District next year. As usual, Republicans say we have to repeal Obamacare and replace it. But he never mentions, replace it with what? Same old talking points. They’re like robots. They have no ideas. They want to stop this, they want to stop spending, they want to stop that, but they have nothing to cover for it. They want to stop Social Security, they want to stop abortions. Have a thousand kids, even if you’re raped. No ideas, sorry.”
— Hagerstown

“I got a question for all you Obamacare supporters. If it’s so great, why don’t all of the congressmen, senators and lots of the other politicians ... why do they have their own insurance plan? It can’t be too great. You people had better wake up and realize what’s happening to this country.”
— Sharpsburg

“Concerning your article on panhandlers in the Greencastle, Pa., area, I for one was one of those panhandlers. I never asked the church or anybody else, other than the people who went by me, for any kind of monetary help or food. I am a veteran, and I did try to do something for this country for 18 years. And I’m grateful to say that I’m now at the VA medical center and ... thanks to everybody who were concerned and helped me out over the years. I was out there on exit 5, southbound 81, for approximately five years. I just want you all to know that I’m very grateful and I’m in a better place.”
— Martinsburg, W.Va.

“It’s Friday, Aug. 9, and I’m reading in this morning’s paper that we’re going to have an August Oktoberfest. Hopefully this time you will reconsider, the city of Hagerstown, especially the mayor, the new mayor and city council, that we do not need alcohol at all these events. Every time we have an event uptown or surrounding areas, it involves alcohol. To me this is totally unnecessary. I’m not against drinking and I see nothing wrong with having a glass of wine, but you should not drink and drive.”
— Hagerstown

“Friday, Aug. 9, Herald-Mail, someone wrote in and asked for the recipe to kill ants that come into the house. I don’t actually know a home recipe, but if they buy Borax detergent and sprinkle it, that will take care of their ants.”
— Chambersburg, Pa.

“I’m calling to thank The Herald-Mail for publishing the article or column, ‘Today in History.’ When it’s not in the paper or if I can’t find it in the paper, I really miss it. It is a very good column. Please continue with it. I look forward to reading it every day, ‘Today in History.’”
— Washington County

“I am reading the list of those who received money from the Washington County Gaming Commission. One group associated with our local police and help keep kids off the street, got very little. Another group associated with our local police and help patrol, ambulance, local events, etc., got nothing. Then we have the houses who house people with addictions. Most are not local, yet they got thousands. Something is wrong with this picture.”
— Hagerstown

“Please, will the county go out and do something about Battletown Road? The people that live back there have to drive over it every day. There are holes all over it, and it is hard on the cars. These people are taxpayers, too. Come on, somebody please check it out. It’s not a little piece here and there of the road, it’s the whole road.”
— Hagerstown

“This is regarding the picture, the ‘Lovely lace,’ the Queen Anne’s lace, on the front page, A3, on Friday, Aug. 9. Are you aware of the fact that you can fan Queen Anne’s lace in food coloring, any color, and leave it a couple of days? It will absorb the color, and you can have a beautiful mixture of colored flowers for your table. This is very easy to do, very inexpensive, and very, very pretty. ... Hope you have some pretty flowers, like I do.”
— Hagerstown

“Queen Anne’s lace: What a beautiful, magical picture, in Friday’s newspaper.”
— Boonsboro

“I just read the Mail Call from the man from Williamsport who was complaining about the inmates working around the pool. I do have a question for the governor of Maryland, officials down at the prison. Why would you let inmates work around a pool where there are young children and women in bathing suits? Come on, people, let’s use our head. It’s getting ridiculous. I just don’t understand what our people, our officials, our prison officials are even thinking.”
— Washington County

“I think it’s ridiculous that our attorney general wants to buy electric tablets for the inmates, and if you use a Medevac helicopter in case of emergency, from Hagerstown to Baltimore, they send you a bill for $38,000. I think you should give the inmates a piece of paper and a pencil, and cut that rate about 9/10ths down. There is definitely something wrong in Annapolis. Lack of knowledge and common sense.”
— South Pointe

“I was calling about the parks, like Pangborn Park, and the mess that the little pond is in, and that the City Park is that way, too. It has like slime over it. I think they should clean it up. And I wasn’t the only one that noticed it. There was another lady who was walking by and said it was such a shame that they didn’t take care of it.”
— Hagerstown

“Caller who wants a remedy on getting rid of ants: I tried traps, sprays, etc. I tried coffee around the door entrance, red pepper, etc. The only thing that has worked for me is put three mothballs behind the kitchen door, under the cabinet (on the  floor) near the floorboard, and I have not seen ants in two years. Also, the Internet offers suggestions.”
— Hagerstown

“So all you people who want to drill, drill, drill, to lower gas prices, be aware that the U.S. is now the leading exporter of oil and natural gas. Also, remember the politicians that want to drill more so we can be independent of foreign oil? Well, that is a total snow job.”
— Waynesboro, Pa.

“The caller who called about the flush tax, memory serves me correctly, it was put in by Gov. Ehrlich when he was governor, but it was passed by a vast majority of Democrats. So Del. Donoghue was a part of that, and he needs to go in 2014.”
— Hagerstown

“This is a response to the Hagerstown caller. I am the caller that called in and said I saw George Carlin and it was a good show. He’s criticized me personally and says that it tells you something about the caller. ... I’m a college graduate veteran that served this country. ... It’s subjective what is quality entertainment or what is not. My whole point was that he was a top-tier entertainer, and we can get top-tier at The Maryland Theatre. This guy needs to get a brain check.”
— Hagerstown

“Loved the story about Head Start. It is one of our nation’s best programs ever. Can’t believe anyone would want to cut it. Keep up the good work, Herald-Mail.”
