Harpers Ferry bird walk set for Aug. 28 at South Schoolhouse Ridge

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. — The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will sponsor a birding trip to the South Schoolhouse Ridge section of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

The walk will begin at 7 a.m. and last two to three hours.

It will be free, and anyone with an interest is welcome to come along, regardless of their birding skills. Children are welcome. Registration is not required.

Participants will meet at the South Schoolhouse Ridge parking area. From U.S. 340 west of Harpers Ferry, turn south onto Millville Road (W.Va. 27) at the outdoor flea market; proceed 2 miles to parking area. If the gate is closed, park along the road.

The trip will involve about 3 miles of walking through woods and fields, with some hilly terrain.

Birds expected to be seen include raptors, grassland and other birds, and fall migrants.

Participants should wear sturdy footwear, dress appropriately for the weather, and bring water and bug spray.

Binoculars will be available.

The trip will canceled in the event of bad weather.
