Edward Charles Wurmb III, 71, of 20024 Babylon Court in Hagerstown, Md., passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at his home.

Born Monday, Sept. 29, 1941, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of the late Edward Charles Wurmb Jr. and Evelyn May (Smith) Wurmb.

He graduated from Penn Technical Institute in 1960 and went right to work with the Department of Defense.

While working, he attended Johns Hopkins University.

He worked for the Defense Department for 35 years with deployments overseas, and he retired in 1991.

After retirement, he was very active in the community.

He was president of National Active and Retired Federal Employees Chapter 306, and served on the state legislative committee for NARFE.

He also was a member of the Phoenix Society.

He was the founder of the Washington County Senior Coalition, and a volunteer tax preparer for the Washington County Commission on Aging.

In 2009, he was inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizen Hall of Fame for his volunteer efforts with senior citizens.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Lou Wurmb; sons, Edward Charles Wurmb IV and wife, Jenn Dolan, of Fairplay, Md., and Steven L. Wurmb and wife, Katherine, of East Berlin, Pa.; granddaughters, Shannon Marie Wurmb of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Megan Elizabeth Wurmb of East Berlin and Abigail Elizabeth Wurmb of Fairplay; great-grandson, Dalton Reid Mitchell of Mechanicsburg; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Susan McDonald officiating. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
