John Edward Ryder Sr., 74, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at home with his family by his side after a long battle with cancer.
Born Aug. 9, 1939, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary Ryder.
John was a 1958 graduate of North Hagerstown High School and a 1975 graduate of Hagerstown Community College.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He was employed by Martin's Elevator, Pangborn Corp. and the Hagerstown Police Department, retiring as a sergeant in 2000 with 37 years service as a dedicated police officer. He completed his career in July 2013 after 13 years as the vehicle maintenance officer for the Hagerstown Police Department.
John was very proud and honored to have served his community and city for the past 50 years. The brotherhood, camaraderie and respect to "Sarge" as shown by the many visits of officers both retired and active, along with staff of the police department and city employees during this last courageous struggle, was a true testament of their love and respect for him.
At the time of his death, John was a member of Washington Square United Methodist Church.
He was a member of the Williamsport Lions Club, where he was honored to have received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 2011, Elks Lodge 378 and Alsatia Club Inc. He was a lifetime member of the North American Rod and Gun Club, Williamsport Red Men Lodge 84, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, Moose International and the Blue Knights.
John served on the board of traffic and public parking for the city of Hagerstown, and served as the Western Maryland regional director for the Maryland Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run.
John also enjoyed working on his antique car.
He is survived by his wife, Rayetta Ryder; sons, Brian D. Ryder and wife, Alexandra, of Smithsburg, Md., Andreas Huffer and fiance, Janelle McKee, of Hagerstown; daughters, Kristen N. Leggett and husband, John, of Waynesboro, Pa., Kelly L. Hessong and husband, David, of Hagerstown, and Laura L. Cromwell and husband, James, of Hagerstown; special niece, Debbie York and husband, Kevin; and other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amanda, Ashlyn, Lane, Eli, Christian, Alivia, Gabrielle, Delaney, Emily, Ashton, Jeremiah and Peyton; and his devoted canine companion, Sophie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Sprecher; and a brother, James Ryder.
Services will be Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Washington Square United Methodist Church, 538 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Jerry L. Lowans officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home.
