Paul and Louwanna Harne celebrate 50 years

  • The Harnes celebrate 50 years.

On June 19, 2013, with sand between their toes, an azure blue ocean backdrop of the Caribbean Sea, and the sound of waves crashing on the shore, Paul and Louwanna Harne of Hagerstown renewed the marriage vows that they made to each other 50 years ago.
Things were different this time around as their children and grandchildren looked admirably at the two who began this family circle so many years ago. The couple “thought” they were having a family photo session on the beach that afternoon during their family vacation at the Iberostar Paraiso Lindo Resort, Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Little did they know that their children had prepared a surprise intimate renewal ceremony, complete with a bouquet of white roses and their son-in-law, the Rev. Shawn Bushman, officiating. As Louwanna renewed her vows to Paul, tears streamed down her cheeks.
This celebration continued on Aug. 4, when the Harnes were honored by their family and church family with an elegant dinner reception. Derr Fellowship Hall was candlelit and transformed into a romantic venue decorated in white linens with gold accents. Cascading lights enveloped in white tulle hung overhead. Classic love songs were played throughout the evening by harpist Heidi Sturnioli. More than 200 people were in attendance at the Virginia Avenue Church of God. Guests dined on top round of beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetarian rice pilaf, Normandy-blend vegetables, Harvard beets, and a dessert bar. A short program preceded dinner as the Harnes’ daughters shared words. Two of their grandsons also participated. One shared a love letter his grandfather had written to his grandma shortly after they had met, and the other one shared a heartfelt tribute the Rev. Harne wrote to his wife.
The Rev A. Paul and Louwanna were married Aug. 3, 1963, at the Williamsburg Church of God in Williamsburg, Pa., with the Rev. David Lykens, now deceased, officiating. In 1975, they started and have continued to serve together in pastoral ministry at the Virginia Avenue Church of God in Hagerstown.
The Harnes have three daughters, Chantelle Eyler of Front Royal, Va. (husband Curt); Paula Bushman of Hagerstown, (husband Shawn); and Jacqueline Varga of Hagerstown.
They have seven grandchildren, Andrew (wife Brittany) and Kylee Eyler; Caleb and Leah Bushman; Mark and Adam Varga and two great-granddaughters, Kennedy and Kendyl Eyler.
