August 15, 2013

SALISBURY, Md. — Kylin Turnbull pitched seven strong innings and got plenty of help from his offense as the Hagerstown Suns completed a three-game sweep of the Delmarva Shorebirds with a 9-1 victory Thursday night.

Estarlin Martinez and Will Piwnica-Worms each had three hits and two RBIs for the Suns, who won their fifth straight game and now trail the first-place West Virginia Power by a half-game in the South Atlantic League Northern Division second-half standings. West Virginia fell 1-0 to Greensboro on Thursday.

Hagerstown broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth. Tony Renda singled and eventually scored on an error, and Khayyan Norfork hit an RBI double for a 3-1 Suns lead.

After an RBI double by Renda made it 4-1 in the fifth, the Suns added three in the seventh on a two-run single by Martinez and a sacrifice fly by Wander Ramos to extend the lead to 7-1.

Piwnica-Worms’ two-run single in the ninth completed the scoring for the Suns, who finished with 12 hits.

Turnbull, the starter, improved to 6-5, allowing one run, five hits and a walk while striking out four in his seven innings. Bryan Harper and Gilberto Mendez each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Hagerstown.

Matt Taylor (4-12) took the loss for the Shorebirds, allowing seven runs (six earned), 10 hits and two walks while striking out three.

The Suns open a four-game homestand against the Asheville Tourists on Friday at Municipal Stadium, beginning at 7:05 p.m.
