George Carl Gibney, 90, of Twin Oaks Assisted Living, Williamsport, and formerly of 947 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, where he lived for 85 years, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at Twin Oaks Assisted Living.

Born July 8, 1923, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Elmer Carl and Edith Mary Baker Gibney.

He graduated from Hagerstown Senior High School in 1941, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.

He retired from Fairchild Aircraft in 1985, with 44 years of service.

Gibney was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church and the American Legion Morris Frock Post 42 of Hagerstown.

He enjoyed hiking (having hiked the length of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal five times), fishing and country music; and was a lifelong New York Yankees fan.

Surviving are nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends living from New York to Georgia. 

He will be especially missed by cousin, Ann Ringer, and her German shepherd, Uschi.

Gibney was preceded in death by siblings, M. Jeannette Mowen and Paul Gibney.

The funeral service will be held Friday, Aug. 16, at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. His pastor, the Rev. Jerry L. Lowans, will officiate. 

Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, 443 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
