Robert E. Simmers Sr., 78, of Malvern, Pa., died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at the Southeastern Veterans Center in Spring City, Pa.

Robert Edward Lee Simmers Sr. was born Jan. 20, 1935, son of the late Joseph and Virginia Simmers, in Funkstown, Md.

Mr. Simmers was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean War.

Mr. Simmers retired from IBM in 1992, as branch manager of engineering in Valley Forge, Pa. He worked for IBM for 37 years, including 17 years at IBM's Hagerstown branch on Northern Avenue. He earned IBM's vice president's award as manager of the year in 1983.

Mr. Simmers is survived by his wife, Becky, of Malvern; his sons, Robert E. Simmers Jr. and wife, Melinda, of Hagerstown, Md., John A. and wife, Tracy, of Rochester, N.H., and Kevin S. and wife, Dana, of Clear Spring, Md.; and four grandchildren, Ben, Abbey, Grant and Brooke Simmers. He is also survived by his brother, C. Joseph Simmers of Norfolk, Va.; and he is survived by his ex-wife, Nellie Simmers of Clear Spring.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Simmers was preceded in death by his son, Greg Simmers; his brother, Charles Simmers; and his best friend, John Kreigh of Hagerstown.

A service will be held in Malvern at a later date.

Per his wishes, Mr. Simmers' body was donated to the Parkinson's Research Center in Florida.
