Schultz sits in second

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Beaver Creek Country Club pro Dirk Schultz continued his fine golf of late with a 5-under-par 66 in the opening round of the PGA Middle Atlantic Players Championship.

Schultz loaded up with eight birdies to offset one bogey and one double bogey on the way to a 32-34 card over the Gold Course at Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. He is one stroke behind David Newsom of River Creek Golf Club in Leesburg, Va.

Schultz is trying for a top-20 finish to qualify him for the ninth time for the PGA Players National Championship next July. After today’s second round, the field will be cut to the low 40 scores and ties for Wednesday.

Pennsylvania Open

HANOVER, Pa. — Chad Bricker, of Waynesboro, Pa., opened his quest for a Pennsylvania Open title with a 4-under-par 68 on Monday at Commonwealth National Club.

Bricker eagled the par-5 first hole to open his round and had six birdies and two bogeys the rest of the way on the 6,999-yard Commonwealth course.

He was tied for second place, one stroke behind leader Travis Howe.

Defending champion Clayton Rotz, of Chambersburg, Pa., had a 75 to begin the tournament.
