WILLIAMSPORT — The Williamsport Town Council voted unanimously Monday night to adopt fine increases for some town parking violations.

The fine for parking on a red line will increase from $5 to $10, and from $10 to $15 for parking on a red line in the wrong direction. The fine for blocking an alley will be raised from $5 to $10 and from $5 to $25 for parking in front of a fire hydrant.

The fine increases will become effective Aug. 31.

The council agreed to approve the hike after Councilman William “Bill” Green expressed concern that some of the parking fines appeared to be too low, according to previous reports in The Herald-Mail.

The council voted 6-0 to approve the changes, with Councilman James Kalbfleisch absent.

In other action, the council unanimously voted to accept a $160,000 state grant for improvements to the town’s 300,000-gallon water tank, which has been shut off since 2008 due to hydraulic valves in need of repair, according to Town Clerk and Treasurer Donald Stotelmyer.

Williamsport purchases its water from Hagerstown city government. The town’s tank is only for reserve purposes.

The Maryland Department of the Environment grant must be matched by $160,000 in town funds, bringing the total for the project to drain, clean and rework the tank’s hydraulic valves to $320,000.

If funds permit, the tank also will be painted, Stotelmyer said.

The project is slated to start in June 2014.

The council also unanimously voted to award three contracts to K&K Painting and Construction Co. of Baltimore for repairs on water-line brackets attached to the town’s bridge on Md. 68.

The first contract of $5,900 is for the removal of the water-pipe-bracket support system. The second contract of $7,200 is for the fabrication of the bracket-support system, while the third is $8,900 for the installation of the system.
