HANCOCK — A woman was flown to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown Monday morning after a single-vehicle accident on westbound Interstate 70 near Hancock, according to Maryland State Police.

The driver and lone occupant of a Scion lost control of the SUV, and it went down an embankment, state police Cpl. Chris Barnard said.

Rescue personnel had to free the woman from the SUV, Barnard said. She was flown from the scene by helicopter to Meritus Medical Center.

The woman’s condition could not be obtained Monday because her name and further details were not provided by state police as of press time.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, Barnard said.

A Washington County Emergency Services supervisor said the accident was reported at about 10:45 a.m. near the eight-mile marker, east of Hancock.

The left westbound lane was open before noon, and all lanes were open by noon.
