Mooneyham sharp as Suns lasso Legends

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Brett Mooneyham allowed two hits and struck out eight in six innings, and the Hagerstown Suns battered Lexington reliever Zeb Sneed for six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull away for an 8-2 victory over the Legends in a South Atlantic League game on Sunday afternoon.

Mooneyham (9-3) walked just one while shutting down the Legends. His ERA is now 2.09.

The Suns (68-49, 30-20) took a 2-0 lead against Lexington starter Matthew Murray in the fourth inning. Narciso Mesa led off and reached base on on a strike-three wild pitch. He took second on a groundout and scored on Estarlin Martinez’s single to center. Martinez stole second and scored on Khayyan Norfork’s two-out single to center.

It remained that way until Hagerstown feasted on Sneed with two three-run innings in the seventh and eighth.

In the seventh, Norfork led off with a walk and Will Piwnica-Worms followed with a home run to right for a 4-0 lead. Stephen Perez walked, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on Mesa’s two-out single to left to make it 5-0.

In the eighth, Martinez led off with a double to right and took third on Wander Ramos’ single to right. Norfork followed with a two-run triple to center for a 7-0 lead. Norfork scored on Perez’s groundout to second to make it 8-0.

Lexington (63-55, 30-20) avoided the shutout in the ninth on Mark Donato’s two-run homer to right off Suns reliever Justin Thomas.
