Washington County Show Kids traveled to South Bend, Ind., July 22 and 23 to compete in the America Youth On Parade national competition at the University of Notre Dame.

The event is the world series of baton twirling.

Eleven members of the Show Kids competed in the event.

About 5,000 twirlers and their families attended the event.

The group had an outstanding showing, capturing two preteen beginner national dance twirl team titles and also bringing home second- and third- place wins.

The team is led by Brenda Cauffman, director and coach of the Show Kids.

The group had an outstanding showing and came back to Maryland with three national champions in individual events.

Individual national champs are Hailey Shelton, beginner solo twirl, age 12; Avery Court, novice solo twirl, age 13; and Harley Wenner, novice solo twirl, age 11.

Two of the teammates, Meagan Sheehan and Tasha Kane, competed for a national title. Sheehan won her state title and Kane won the regional title. To compete for a national title, a competitor must win first place at the state level or first place at the regional level.

Kane and Sheehan competed in the pageant events, with Kane placing fourth in solo, seventh in modeling and eighth in Super X with an overall third-place pageant win. Sheehan placed sixth in pageant solo.

All 11 girls who traveled to Notre Dame from the Show Kids placed at least once in the top 10 of their individual events. Each group had more than 40 contestants. Some groups were so large they had to be divided in half.
