Peter B. Brownell Jr., 82, of Berryville, Va., died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at his residence.

Brownell was born Nov. 15, 1930, in Detroit, Mich., son of the late Peter B. Brownell Sr. and Geraldine Mary Louise Schlaf Brownell.

Peter attended Henry Ford Trade School. On his 17th birthday, he joined the U.S. Air Force. After dedicating 20 years, he retired in February 1968 as a master sergeant. During his time in the Air Force, he was a flight engineer and piloted flights carrying such dignitaries as Gen. Paul Freeman, commander in chief of the U.S. Army Europe, and Robert Kennedy, U.S. attorney general. He was able to log more than 13,000 flying hours by the time of his retirement.

After retiring, he began his civilian career with Bendix Flight Group as a flight engineer and assistant chief of supply and procurment on a government contract with NASA, calibrating the routes and flight plans for astronauts. He accepted a federal government appointment with the General Services Administration, allowing him to travel to Columbus, Ohio; Okinawa, Japan; and Sagami, Japan. In 1980, he started with the Army National Guard Bureau, obtaining various promotions before retiring in February 1996.

He was a member of the Berryville Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hagerstown Moose Lodge, Eagles Club and the Winchester American Legion.

He married Evelyn Beatrice Amos Brownell on Aug. 20, 1950. She died on May 1, 2007.

His brother, Robert Edward Brownell, preceded him in death.

Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Jane Forrester and her husband, Gary, of Augusta, W.Va., Susan Marie Daniel and her husband, John O., of Leesburg, Va., and Belinda Brownell and her significant other, Carlton, of Dickerson, Md.; a stepdaughter, Laura Jean Moses of Newton, N.C.; a son, Peter B. Brownell III and his wife, Kathleen, of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Marie Geraldine Brownell, O.P., of Adrian, Mich.; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601.
