Donald Arnold Smith, 81, of Hagerstown, died on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at his home.

Born Aug. 9, 1931, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of the late Claude Arnold Smith and Anastasia Ann Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife, Millicent Alene (Nicholson) Smith; a son, Donald "Joe" Smith; a daughter, Linda "Sue" Snyder; grandsons, Christian and Tyler Snyder; and great-grandchildren, Nathanial and Joshua Snyder.

Don served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He was a teacher at Walter Johnson High School for many years. He wrote four technical books, had an piece in the Encyclopedia Britannica on vacuum tubes and published many articles. Donald was an engineer and announcer with WHAG radio for 40 years, then a weekend announcer for WJEJ until his death.

Don was a past president of the Funkstown Lions Club; a life member of AMVETS No. 10; Korean War Veterans Chapter No. 312; a member of the Funkstown American Legion Post No. 211; and a member of Harvest Baptist Church, where he was also an usher for many years.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. James E. Moore officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
