Hagerstown pitchers Brett Mooneyham and Derek Self combined for a two-hit shutout as the Suns defeated the Lakewood BlueClaws 3-0 on Tuesday night at Municipal Stadium.

Mooneyham allowed one hit and four walks while striking out seven in 7 1/3 innings of work to get the win. He improved to 8-3 while lowering his ERA to 2.25.

After giving up consecutive walks with one out in the top of the eighth, Mooneyham was relieved by Self to try to protect a 2-0 lead.

Self allowed only one hit and had a pair of strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of relief to notch his fourth save of the year.

The Suns, who’ve won two straight and six of their last seven games, now trail first-place West Virginia by only 1 1/2 games in the South Atlantic League Northern Division second-half standings.

The Suns took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second against Lakewood starter Jonathan Musser (1-7). Will Piwnica-Worms walked, stole second and went to third on a single by Khayyan Norfork. Pedro Severino then followed with a two-run triple to left field — all with no outs.

But the BlueClaws escaped further damage with a groundout and an inning-ending double play.

The Suns added an insurance run in the eighth off Lakewood reliever Lee Ridenhour. Tony Renda hit a one-out single and Shawn Pleffner followed with an RBI double to make it 3-0.

Pleffner finished with two of Hagerstown’s eight hits in the game to raise his batting average to .304. Piwnica-Worms also had a double.

Willie Carmona hit a double for Lakewood with one out in the ninth.

The Suns will try for a three-game sweep of the BlueClaws on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Municipal Stadium as they conclude a seven-game homestand.
