Gladys Golden Schmedes, 86, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born March 20, 1927, in Brooklyn, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Norene Dawson Mangum.

She was a member of Pasadena United Methodist Church in Pasadena, Md.

She was a wonderful wife and homemaker who loved children. Gladys was an avid camper and swimmer.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Carl Franklin Schmedes, at home; nieces, Norene Charlotte Rice of Bel Air, Md., and Mary Stafford of Baltimore, Md.; nephews, Joseph Mangum of Hagerstown, Md., Charles Mangum of Severna Park, Md., and Alfred Thomas Mulcare Sr. of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; great-niece, Mary Frances Mulcare of Berkeley Springs; great-nephews, Alfred Mulcare of Great Cacapon, W.Va. and Edward Cope Jr. of Martinsburg; and many other loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one niece, Jane Mulcare.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 49 S. Green St., Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Andrew J Cooney officiating. Interment will be private.
